Tally Brown, New York is a loving, often amusing portrait of Tally Brown, cabaret singer par excellence, legend of the New York 60’s Andy Warhol underground. We see Tally walking down the street in Washington Heights; through Miami’s “geriatric ghetto”; with Taylor Mead, Holly Woodlawn, or Divine, remembering the New York scene, from the Continental Baths to Reno Sweeney’s; as she wrestles with the New York Workman’s Compensation Board. But only when we see Tally performing do we understand how uniquely gifted she was. Tally Brown never recorded commercially, so this film is the only document of the magnificent voice and riveting presence which inspired critics to call her “the white Bessie Smith”.
